Scarborough & surrounding areas

Scarborough was one of the first English seaside resorts and has been a Spa since 1622 when the therapeutic value of its mineral waters was recognised. By the 19th Century its fame vied with the Spas of Europe and fashionable visitors flocked here to stay in magnificent hotels. Yet Scarborough's history goes back even further - to the rough and ready days when the 12th Century castle on the headland was not in ruins as it is today. Scarborough is an all-year round place, ideal for a family holiday with two large sandy beaches, its busy fishing harbour and yachting marina, its nightlife and full calendar of events - cricket, fishing, motorcycling, Shrovetide skipping festival and sailing regatta in July.

There is always a lot going on during the day. At night there are old-time music hall and concerts at the Spa, regular concerts and films at the Futurist, and plays at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in the Round which stages much of the work of resident playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourn. And if you need a rest from all the activity, the peace and beauty of the North York Moors National Park are only a few minutes drive away.
