Scarborough & Surrounding Areas

Scarborough is hailed as, ”The Queen of the Yorkshire Coast” and was one of the first English seaside resorts. A Spa town since 1622, the town was then visited by eager tourists to sample the therapeutic minerals waters which had just been discovered. Today it is still a thriving and exciting seaside resort with lovely sands, donkeys and basically something for all of the family.

In the 19th century, its fame vied with the Spas of Europe and fashionable visitors flocked to the town to stay in the magnificent hotels.

These gorgeous buildings are still to be seen towering over the clifftops with stunning views out to sea. The other stunning sight overlooking the sands is Scarborough Castle dating back to the 12th century. Although in ruins today, it still provides a great history lesson and thoughts of bygone days.

Scarborough is an all-year round town ideal for a family holiday, with two large sandy beaches, a busy fishing harbour and a yachting marina. There is also a fascinating Sea Life centre. There is plenty of nightlife for the grown ups and a full calendar of events throughout the year; cricket (Yorkshire C.C.), fishing, motorcycling on Oliver’s Mount, a student drama festival, a Shrovetide skipping festival and the sailing regatta in July.

The spectacular new Open Air Theatre attracts international stars and Elton John is the latest of these to announce concert dates there.

Other entertainment includes, “Old Time Music Hall” and concerts at the Spa complex and regular concerts and films at the Futurist Theatre.

Ken Dodd has been a regular performer in the town for many years. International playwright and director, Alan Ayckbourn, has the theatre, Stephen Joseph Theatre in the Round, and premieres his new shows there before they move on to London.

Possibly the greatest attraction is the surrounding area with the splendour of the North York Moors National Park, Dalby Forest (often a venue for international performers) and the rugged North Yorkshire coastline. Whitby is only a half hour drive away and York less than an hour. What a place!
