The historic city of York is the best preserved medieval city in the UK. Few cities look as completely medieval as York with its maze of ancient timbered houses and narrow winding streets.
The pride of York is the huge and magnificent Minster which towers over the city and which is the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. York Minster has some of the finest examples of medieval stained glass.
The spirit of medieval York is perhaps seen clearest of all in the ancient streets where the upper storey's of the houses lean precariously towards each other across the roadway, some with fascinating names like The Shambles and Goodramgates. The four great bars or gates of the city still command the main roads and are a reminder of grimmer days when the strength of the city of York lay within its walls.
Today, although very much aware of its long and fascinating history, York is a thriving city with many tourist attractions for the young and old: theatres, museums like the Jorvik Viking Centre, the Castle Museum and the National Railway museum, shops, pubs and restaurants. In short, the city has much to offer without having to go far.
